If you're here because a clear cover cracked and someone asked you to “just order another one,” you have my sympathy. That’s exactly how I got pulled into this topic.
I’m not a materials engineer. I’m an office administrator who has handled purchasing for a 140-person manufacturing site since 2020. I manage about $180,000 in annual spend across three locations. I answer to finance, so I care about price; I also answer to operations, so I care about things that break at the worst time.
If you searched “is acrylic or polycarbonate stronger,” the direct answer is polycarbonate for impact. The useful answer is not that simple, because a polycarbonate sheet can handle hits that crack acrylic, while acrylic can still be the better plastic cover for a different set of conditions.

In 2022, I ordered a clear acrylic cover for a light fixture near a roll-up door. The acrylic quote was $185; the polycarbonate option was $255. Same nominal size, same look, same thickness. I picked acrylic because the fixture was mounted inside a metal frame and I didn’t think anything would hit it directly.
A pallet jack tapped the frame a few weeks later and bent it just enough to change the load on the cover. The acrylic cracked from a screw hole straight across. The replacement cost $340 after express shipping and the maintenance tech’s time. That still annoys me, not because $340 is a huge number, but because I knew better and made the cheap choice anyway.
I’m not going to tell you polycarbonate is unbreakable. It scratches, it can dent, and it can fail under severe force. But it tends to bend and absorb energy before it shatters. Acrylic is more brittle. Once impact exceeds its limit, it cracks—and cracks often travel from a mounting hole or edge. That makes polycarbonate my default for any cover near carts, doors, forklifts, or maintenance work.
UV and clarity: acrylic has the long-term advantage
The phrase “polycarbonate always yellows” is a holdover from a less advanced generation of plastic. Modern UV-stabilized polycarbonate is much better than it used to be, and I’ve stopped dismissing it for outdoor use based on stories from the early 2000s.
That said, if the cover faces direct sun and my internal customer will judge it by how clear it still looks after five years, I still lean acrylic. Acrylic has strong light transmission and natural UV resistance. Polycarbonate with a UV hardcoat can close the gap, but that coating is not always included in the base price.
So when someone asks “which is stronger,” I usually ask: stronger against impact, or stronger against sunlight? Those are different material properties. A sheet can win one test and lose the other.
Scratches are a separate fight
Impact strength doesn’t mean surface hardness. Bare polycarbonate can scratch more easily than people expect, especially if someone cleans it with a dry rag after dust has settled. Acrylic scratches too, but it tends to handle casual cleaning better, and light surface scratches on acrylic can often be polished out.
When I buy polycarbonate, I ask whether the sheet has a scratch-resistant coating. If it does, it can look presentable for years. If I buy uncoated polycarbonate just to save money, I might end up replacing a cover that looks foggy instead of one that’s cracked. That is still a failure.
Installation matters more than the spec sheet suggests
Polycarbonate is more forgiving during installation. You can drill and fasten it without the same fear you get with acrylic. If an acrylic sheet is rigid, the hole is too close to an edge, or someone overtightens a screw, the crack might not show up until later—then it appears suddenly and looks like a material defect.
An experienced acrylic fabricator can avoid those issues and make very clean parts. But for people on site who aren’t plastic specialists, polycarbonate gives a bigger margin for error. That margin has real value, and I count it as part of the total cost even when a supplier doesn’t put it on the invoice.

In January 2025, I asked a regular supplier to quote clear 4 mm sheet in sizes we use for covers. Acrylic quotes came in about 20 to 45 percent lower than polycarbonate with comparable specs, before shipping. That’s not a universal price chart, but it matches what I’ve seen from other vendors this year.
If I buy on price per sheet alone, acrylic wins. If I buy on the total cost of having the cover fabricated, installed, and kept serviceable, the result is less predictable. The acrylic cover I replaced cost less upfront, but by the second replacement it had cost more than the polycarbonate version I avoided.
This doesn’t mean acrylic is a trap. I still buy it for low-risk spots where the cover won’t be touched. But I make that choice on purpose now, not because the preview price looked better.
One more buying habit I’ve added: ask who made the resin and what grade it is. If a salesperson name-drops a polymer producer, I don’t nod and move on. A traceable source is useful—if I see a LyondellBasell logo on a material certificate, I read that as good provenance. But a logo is not a material spec. The grade, additives, coating, and thickness determine how the finished plastic cover behaves.
What “polycarbonate bulletproof” really means
The phrase “polycarbonate bulletproof” should come with a lot of fine print. Polycarbonate is used in security glazing and protective equipment because it absorbs energy instead of shattering into dangerous fragments. That makes it a common part of bullet-resistant systems.
But a bare plastic sheet is not a certified ballistic barrier in most real installations. Ballistic glazing is usually an engineered assembly: multiple layers, proper framing, and specific mounting methods. It is tested against standardized threats under programs like NIJ or UL 752. If a vendor says “bulletproof” but can’t show a test standard and a corresponding report, I stop taking that vendor seriously.
Polycarbonate is tough. “Tough” is not the same as “certified for gunfire.” If the real requirement is security, buy a complete rated system rather than hoping a thick sheet will do the job.
How I decide between acrylic and polycarbonate now
My working rules are simple:
- Choose acrylic when the cover is protected, indoor, low-impact, and long-term clarity is more important than surviving a hit. It costs less and handles sunlight well.
- Choose polycarbonate when the cover could be hit by a person, cart, tool, equipment, or outside objects. It costs more upfront, but it has saved me from repeated replacement orders.
- Choose a rated security glazing system when the goal is bullet resistance. A normal cover sheet is not a substitute.
If you ask me simply “is acrylic or polycarbonate stronger,” I’ll say polycarbonate, because impact is what most people actually mean. But if you ask what I would order for a specific plastic cover, I’ll ask where it will be installed. A material can be stronger in one sense and still be wrong for the job. I’ve made that mistake, and it cost me the $70 I tried to save.
