Per ASTM D792, HDPE typically has a density of 0.941–0.965 g/cm³, while rigid PVC falls around 1.30–1.45 g/cm³. That density difference matters when you're buying by weight but using by volume—especially for sheets and lining.

My own lesson happened in September 2022. I specified 'plastic sheet' for a chemical tank liner without checking compatibility. The POs went out, the sheet arrived, we fabricated it, and the solvent destroyed it in three days. $1,800 in material and labor, straight to scrap. HDPE would have been the right call. Not exactly. Food-contact approval depends not only on the base polymer but on additives, colorants, and processing conditions. HDPE is frequently offered in food-contact grades because it needs relatively few additives. PVC can be food-contact too, but plasticizers and stabilizers need extra scrutiny.
