I manage purchasing for a 300-person manufacturing services company. When I took over in 2020, I assumed most suppliers were essentially the same. I was wrong. My total buy is roughly $180,000–$220,000 a year across materials, maintenance supplies, and office fit-out, and I’ve made enough mistakes to know which questions matter.
This FAQ is about four things I buy regularly: plastic grate, machined polycarbonate components, nylon vs polypropylene carpet, and resin traceability. If you’re an admin buyer or a small operations person, this is the list I wish someone had given me.
Is all plastic grate the same?
No. Not even close.
I used to think a grate was a grate. If the spec said “polypropylene grate” or “HDPE grate,” I assumed one quote could be compared to the next. Then I approved a polypropylene trench grate for the drainage area near our loading dock. The price was competitive, the photos looked identical, and the supplier seemed fine. Six months later, the middle section warped enough that a pallet jack caught on the edge. Nobody was hurt, but it cost us replacement labor and an awkward conversation with operations.
The difference usually comes down to resin, manufacturing method, and load rating. A grate made from prime PP with UV stabilizer will behave differently than one made with high regrind content. That doesn’t mean recycled-content grate is automatically bad. For light-duty indoor maintenance jobs, it can be completely acceptable. But if the grate will sit outside or take forklift traffic, you need the material grade and load test result in writing.
What I ask now: exact material grade, load rating, UV stabilization, test method, and certificate of conformance. If the answer is “it’s a plastic grate, it’ll be fine,” I keep looking.
What do I need to know about machining polycarbonate?
Machining polycarbonate is not the same as machining metal. It’s not even the same as machining ABS.
Polycarbonate is tough, but it can crack, cloud, or stress-fracture if the tooling and cutting parameters are wrong. The first time we ordered machined polycarbonate sight windows, I didn’t know enough to ask about stress relief. The parts looked clear when they arrived. A few months later, two of them crazed—thin micro-cracks near the mounting holes. The fabricator used the right material but the wrong process.
What I mean is this: a CNC shop that does great metal work may not automatically know how to handle plastic. The material changes how the part should be held, cut, cooled, and deburred. If the tool gets too hot, the polycarbonate can cloud or develop internal stress that appears later. To be fair, some metal shops do excellent plastic work. But “we can machine it” is not the same as “we have machined this material before.”
My checklist for machined polycarbonate parts: sharp carbide tooling, controlled feeds, proper chip clearance, no aggressive coolant, and stress-relief annealing if the drawing has tight tolerances or the part will be load-bearing. I also ask for photos of similar parts. Photos don’t prove quality by themselves, but they show whether “polycarbonate” is a real job or just a line item on a website.
Nylon vs polypropylene carpet: which one should I specify?
Neither is better in every situation. I know that sounds like a non-answer, but it’s the honest one.
Nylon carpet tends to handle heavy traffic and regular cleaning better. It also recovers from compression better, which matters in offices with rolling chairs. Polypropylene carpet is often less expensive, resists water-based stains, and works well in moderate-traffic spaces. But in high-traffic paths, polypropylene can crush, and oil-based stains can be stubborn.
To be fair, the final answer depends on construction, face weight, backing, and whether you’re buying carpet tile or broadloom. Carpet tile changes the equation because you can replace individual sections. A polypropylene tile in a conference room may be fine. The same fiber in a main corridor can wear out quickly.
If you’re comparing nylon vs polypropylene carpet by price alone, you’re only comparing the first number on the invoice. Someone still has to clean, maintain, and replace it. That’s not a reason to reject polypropylene. It’s a reason to know which areas it’s actually suited for.

Brand alone doesn’t guarantee a finished part, but it can make traceability easier.
When I order a custom plastic product, I want the purchase order to name the exact resin or at least a clear product family. If the supplier says “polycarbonate” and nothing else, there is no traceability if the part fails. I can’t prove what was in it, and the supplier can always say the issue was environmental.
A certificate of analysis with a LyondellBasell logo is a good sign because it gives you a starting point for traceability. It tells you the raw material source and lot information should be there—assuming the document is genuine and the lot number matches the product you received. It does not tell you whether the fabricator processed it correctly. Even a premium resin can become a bad part if the molder or machinist uses the wrong conditions.
The practical rule I follow: verify the logo, check the lot number, keep a copy of the COA, and still ask about the converter’s process controls. The resin brand answers one question. It doesn’t answer all of them.
Why is one quote so much lower than the others?
Sometimes it means you found a genuinely efficient supplier. Sometimes it means you’re comparing different products.
I’ve had vendors come in 30% lower on a plastic grate project. At first I thought I was being smart. Then I read the quote more carefully: no load rating, no material certificate, no UV stabilizer. The product might have worked for a light-duty job. But for our loading dock, it was not equivalent. That’s the frustrating part: the document looked similar, but the actual product wasn’t.
What I do now is compare the hidden details first: material grade, weight, tolerances, lead time, and documentation. If those match, price is the deciding factor. If they don’t match, a lower price isn’t a saving. It’s a different scope.
To be fair, low-cost vendors can be excellent. Some smaller shops have low overhead and do great work. But I need them to explain why the price is lower. If the answer is “we use a different resin” or “we can’t provide a COA,” I can decide whether that trade-off works. I just don’t want to discover it after the parts arrive.
How do I verify a material certificate without being an engineer?
You don’t need to be an engineer. You need to be specific.
For any polymer part, I ask for three things: the exact material grade, the applicable datasheet, and a certificate of conformance with a lot number. If a supplier says “equivalent to LyondellBasell polypropylene,” I ask them to write the exact resin name and code on the quote. If a machined part is supposed to be polycarbonate, I ask for the manufacturer and grade—not just “clear plastic.”
The certificate doesn’t need to be twenty pages. It needs to name the product, the lot, and the producer. If flammability matters, ask for the test method: UL 94 for plastic parts, ASTM E84 for carpet. I don’t interpret the numbers myself. I just make sure the numbers are there.
If a supplier says “we don’t provide certificates,” I log that as a risk. Maybe the price is low enough to accept it. But I want to make that decision with my eyes open.
What’s something buyers don’t think to ask until it’s too late?
Lead time certainty. Not just “when will it ship?” but “what happens if it doesn’t?”
In 2022, I ordered replacement polycarbonate panels for an equipment guard. The quote said four weeks. At six weeks, I called and learned the material was on backorder. At nine weeks, I found another fabricator and paid more to get the job done. The first supplier then charged a restocking fee because the custom-cut panels weren’t returnable. The total cost was more than the original quote, and I still had to cover a second order.
Now I always ask the same follow-up: is the resin in stock, is the sheet in stock, and is the machine time confirmed? If a salesperson can’t answer those, I know the lead time is an estimate. Estimates are normal. What I need is an honest estimate and a plan for what to do when it moves.
In my opinion, this is where efficiency and good buying overlap. A supplier who can tell you exactly where your order stands is worth more than one who simply says “no problem.” Documentation is not overhead. It’s how you avoid buying the same thing twice.
