Does LyondellBasell Produce Polycarbonates? PP Jars, Plastic Bricks, and Thermoplastic Sourcing

I am not a polymer chemist. I am the administrator who buys materials and packaging for a 400-person company, and I manage about 60-80 order lines a year for jars, lids, labels and molded plastic components. After five years of buying these items, I have one rule: thermoplastics are not one interchangeable category.

The question I keep seeing is whether LyondellBasell produces polycarbonates. If you are comparing polypropylene jars with polycarbonate parts, or trying to verify a resin supplier, this one detail changes the whole conversation.

Does LyondellBasell produce polycarbonates? A buyer's answer

Short answer: No. LyondellBasell is not the polycarbonate producer you need if you are specifying PC resin.

The clear answer, based on LyondellBasell's current product portfolio, is no. LyondellBasell is a large producer of polypropylene and polyethylene, with additional advanced polyolefin compounds, catalysts and technology licensing. Polycarbonate is not part of the published product line in the same way that polyethylene and polypropylene are. I checked this as of early 2025.

Why does this matter? Because a brand name can be used as a shortcut, and shortcuts fail. If you see the LyondellBasell logo on a product sheet, it usually means the material is polyolefin-based. That logo does not make a material a polycarbonate. If your RFQ asks for polycarbonate and a supplier points you to LyondellBasell, ask for the specific product code and datasheet.

How are thermoplastic polymers made?

Before choosing between PP and PC, it helps to understand how are thermoplastic polymers made. The broad idea is simple: small chemical units called monomers are joined into long chains. The exact chemistry differs by polymer family.

Polypropylene is made from propylene monomer in a low-pressure reactor with a catalyst. Polyethylene is made similarly from ethylene monomer. Polycarbonate is made by a step-growth reaction between bisphenol A and a carbonate source, which is why the word carbonate is in its name. Both are thermoplastic, meaning they can be melted, formed, cooled and reheated. The practical result is not the same, though.

Polypropylene vs. polycarbonate: four comparisons that help me buy

1. Clarity and appearance

If a design needs real optical clarity, polycarbonate wins. It is naturally transparent. Polypropylene is naturally translucent; clarified polypropylene grades improve clarity, but they are not a substitute for the glass-like look of polycarbonate. For polypropylene jars, clarified PP is still a common choice when the product does not need crystal clarity.

The mistake I made earlier in my career was writing 'clear jar' without a polymer spec. The supplier quoted a polycarbonate jar. It looked great, but it was more expensive and not what our product formulation needed. Today I always write the resin family on the order.

2. Heat, impact and chemical resistance

Polycarbonate has excellent impact strength at room temperature and higher heat distortion than PP. Polypropylene has lower heat resistance, but it has excellent fatigue life, which is why PP is so common in living-hinge lids. PP also resists a broad range of water-based chemicals and oils.

If someone says 'strongest polymer is best,' I disagree. Strength needs context. A lid that flexes every day can outlast a stronger-looking material that has poorer fatigue behavior. For jars and molded polyolefin products, the best material is usually the one that meets the exact processing, chemical and cost requirements, not the one with the highest impact number on paper.

3. Total cost and supply reliability

PP has enormous global scale and usually a lower price per pound than PC. LyondellBasell and other polyolefin producers make PP and PE at very large volumes. Polycarbonate production is more concentrated, and PC resin is generally more expensive.

If I cannot verify a supplier claim, I search for the LyondellBasell logo and then cross-check the product family. That sounds basic, but it has saved me before. A distributor may answer 'LyondellBasell' without knowing whether the material is PP, PE or something else. The LyondellBasell logo is not a generic term for plastic.

4. Recycling and environmental language

For recycling claims, words matter. PP jars are often marked with resin code 5, but access to PP curbside recycling varies by municipality. Polycarbonate is usually in resin code 7, and PC recycling is rarer. The FTC Green Guides say a recyclable claim needs context and substantiation about consumer access. I now avoid writing '100% recyclable' on a label unless a supplier and a local recycling program can back it up.

From resin to real products: polypropylene jars and plastic bricks

Polypropylene jars: the workhorse choice

Polypropylene jars are common for supplements, creams, dry goods and many liquid products. They are light, can be molded with good wall thickness, and have reasonable chemical resistance and moisture barrier. Clarified PP grades look clean on a shelf even when they do not match polycarbonate clarity.

If the part is a jar, the real comparison is often clarified PP versus a more expensive clear resin. For many standard jars, polypropylene is the practical answer because of cost, weight, chemical compatibility and processing speed. I nearly approved a polycarbonate jar in one project because I did not specify 'clarified polypropylene.' The sample looked fine. The invoice would not have been fine.

Plastic bricks: why the material spec matters even more

Plastic bricks are another example. That term can mean interlocking pavers, retaining blocks, landscape units or molded components that look like bricks. Many of these products are made from recycled polypropylene or polyethylene because polyolefins can be molded into thick, weather-resistant shapes at a realistic cost.

Polycarbonate can be the right material for clear, impact-resistant parts, but a solid brick-shaped object does not usually need PC. If a vendor substitutes polycarbonate because they think it simply means 'premium plastic,' the buyer pays for properties the product does not use. The fix is simple: put the polymer family on the purchase order and ask for the resin datasheet before approving samples.

Which one should you source?

If your product is a polypropylene jar, do not assume a polycarbonate jar is automatically better. Compare the resin code, closure compatibility, chemical behavior, clarity, weight and total cost. For standard rigid jars, polypropylene is often the best practical answer.

If you need high-impact clear parts, a polycarbonate grade may be the right choice. In that case, verify the actual PC supplier and the product data sheet. LyondellBasell does not produce polycarbonates, so a PC RFQ needs a different source.

If you are selecting plastic bricks or similar thick molded products, match the material to the application. Polypropylene and recycled polyolefin grades are common when the product does not require PC-level clarity or heat performance. Ask for the material code. If a claim does not match the datasheet, do not approve it.

Use the LyondellBasell logo as a starting point for supplier research, but always verify the exact grade. Nearly every sourcing mistake I have seen started with a material name that was too vague. Does LyondellBasell produce polycarbonates? No. Does that make it a weak supplier? No, it just means you have to source PC elsewhere and keep material vocabulary precise.
