Common mistakes I still watch for
I manage purchasing for a 400-person manufacturing company. That means I am not a polymer chemist. I am the person who checks paperwork, schedules deliveries, and answers the office question: can this plastic actually go in the recycling bin? That job teaches you a different side of plastics.
If you are here because you saw the name LyondellBasell on a spec sheet, or because you are trying to make sense of the PP logo on a product, this checklist is for you.

And is number 5 plastic recyclable? The last answer isn't a simple yes or no, so I use a five-step order before buying anything marked recyclable.
1. Confirm the supplier actually makes the polymer you need
The first question on many lists is: Does LyondellBasell produce polycarbonates?
The short answer: not as a base polycarbonate resin. But I refuse to leave the answer there because procurement questions rarely end with one material. LyondellBasell's main production strengths are polypropylene and polyethylene. The company also has an advanced polymer solutions business that handles compounds, blends, and masterbatches. Some advanced compounds can be based on, or contain, polycarbonate. If the product data sheet says PC in the composition, then you are buying a polycarbonate compound, not a raw PC resin. Those are different conversations.
For raw PC resin, I would look for a producer whose core business is polycarbonate. For a compound, I would ask the supplier to tell me exactly which resin family is in the product. Do not guess from the parent company name.
A supplier that knows its limits is not a weak supplier. In my experience, the company that says 'this is not our core material—here is who handles that better' causes fewer quality issues than the one that claims it can do everything.
2. Use the LyondellBasell login to pull current documents
Once the polymer family is clear, get the technical paperwork. If your company has an account, go to the LyondellBasell login page before you send a purchase order. I want three current documents saved on our shared drive: the product data sheet, the certificate of analysis, and the safety data sheet.
I learned this in 2024 when I almost approved a polypropylene grade based on a brochure attached to a sales email. The email said one melt-flow rate; the current data sheet in the LyondellBasell portal said another. Our quality lab would have built its startup tests on the wrong number. Not a disaster, but an expensive confusion.
Now I don't verify materials from memory or sales notes. I verify them from the portal. It takes ten minutes and saves an argument later.
3. Read the PP logo as a material code, not a recycling permit
The PP logo on packaging or a molded part usually appears as the letters PP with a number 5 inside a triangle. The code identifies the resin as polypropylene. That's all it does. It does not tell you whether your local recycling program accepts the item.
The word resin also confuses people. A decorative polyresin figure—like a seasonal resin bunny on someone's desk—is not the same as polypropylene resin. If the item doesn't carry a PP logo, do not put it in the PP recycling pile just because it feels like plastic.
I keep this rule in my procurement notes: PP logo means material. Recyclability depends on collection, sorting, and end markets.
4. Ask the local hauler: is number 5 plastic recyclable here?
The direct answer to is number 5 plastic recyclable is: yes, if a recycling program for number 5 actually operates where you are. Polypropylene is recyclable in the right stream, but the stream varies by city, by building, and by hauler.
In 2020, I ordered 600 clear polypropylene folders with our company branding. They had a #5 PP logo. I assumed our local recycling program accepted them. It didn't. The folders were not contaminated or low quality; they just were not on the hauler's list. They went into the general trash because I did not verify one fact before ordering.
Now I ask two questions before choosing any #5 product: Does the hauler accept number 5 PP? Does it need to be separated or bagged? If the answer to the first question is no, the product is not recyclable in my location, no matter what the logo says.
Per the FTC Green Guides, a recyclable label has to be substantiated. If a substantial majority of consumers in the area don't have recycling access for that package, an unqualified recyclable claim is misleading. The #5 code is not proof.
5. Name the resin in writing on every PO
The final step is simple: make the vendor write down the material. A good line reads: Polypropylene homopolymer, resin identification code 5 PP. If the line just says plastic or resin, send it back for clarification.
This matters when the product is from a large supplier like LyondellBasell. The data sheet will name the polymer family. If the product is LyondellBasell PP, that's what you should see. If a compound includes other resins, the data sheet should say so. Do not rely on the marketing page.
Common mistakes I still watch for
First, people treat the PP logo as a green light. It isn't. The green light comes from your recycler.
Second, people substitute polypropylene for polycarbonate because #5 plastic has a better recycling reputation. Those are different materials with different properties. If the original specification needs polycarbonate, let an engineer change it. A buyer should not change the polymer just to make recycling easier.
Third, people accept the phrase fully recyclable without asking where. There is no such thing as fully recyclable everywhere. There is only recyclable in a particular program.
Here is the bottom line: check what the supplier makes, pull the documents, read the resin code, ask the local hauler about #5 PP, and put the polymer name on the PO. A good supplier will tell you when a material falls outside its expertise. That doesn't make them less capable. It makes them easier to trust.
