The $0.85/lb quote might look great until you realize it requires a 10,000 lb minimum order and the material is coming from a port that's been running 2-week delays. The $0.95/lb local option with 5,000 lb minimum might be cheaper, overall. Bottom line: don't let the unit price fool you.

Scenario C: The Specification Phase (R&D & Prototyping)

This is a tricky one.   • If production starts in 60+ days: You're in Scenario B. Take your time. Run the TCO numbers. Build a relationship.
  • If you're still prototyping: You're in Scenario C. Prioritize technical support and flexibility. The price at this stage is less relevant than the data you get.
